It's a phone dominated society with technology now reaching a point where almost everyone seems to be carrying some type of communication device where ever they go.

Back in the 18th century in the US, people used to carry gun holsters on their hip, then they were outlawed and only those licensed to use them such as the law could carry them. Now, we've almost gone full circle and instead of guns, people now carry holsters on the hips carrying a communication device such as a phone.

Consider PDA's or Personal Digital Assistants. Once upon a time they were simply calculators but in a short space of time, have become a necessary piece of communication for the majority. While there may be a learning curve associated with them it seems the biggest challenge than facing people is which one to choose.

The same applies to cell phones and with the integration of the two, communicating personally, by message text or via email is now as mobile as it gets. Originally, they started out as big as bricks but soon decreased in size and as they did, became more powerful.

Devices such as the Blackberry and the Iphone in recent years have taken these communication levels to a brand new level and the truth is, we "ain't seen nothing yet." Now being able to talk with someone away from home is the norm, being able to get online without a computer is almost the norm and not having to worry about a phone cord is...well, what's that!

Wireless technology was aazing when it first surfaced but now, it's just part of the landscape. One of the significant aspects of cell phone technology is the increased competition for consumers by those providing the service and technology means the price of both the gadgets and the carriers themselves have dropped alarmingly. It's definitely a buyers market.

Pre Paid Phone Cards

What about phone cards? Well, they are still pretty popular. Prepaid phone cards have grown so much in popularity over the past few years that I can honestly say, particularly within my circle of friends, I don't know anyone who hasn't used one.

Their growth has been significant within the international calling arena, in fact, prepaid phone cards have become part of the communication vocabulary. International phone cards, international calling cards and prepaid phone cards...you've only got to take a walk down a busy shopping precinct and you see phone card advertising everywhere. From the local newsagent to the delicatessan; you don't have to look very far to buy a phonecard.

Upgrading your GPS softwares and maps on your PCs and laptops is necessary. Upgrading these maps regularly will offer you access to the latest software that come equipped with a lot more features, than just the route guidance. In addition, your new device with lots of storage space will not be a complete utility gadget, until you have latest GPS software for navigation.

An outdated version of a location map in your GPS software will not lead you to your destination. Roads, houses, towns, cities, streets are constantly changing and a map that was relevant last year may be completely useless today. So, to ensure that you are moving in the right direction during a long road journey, you must get an upgraded version of the GPS software or a map in your pocket PC.

Several GPS navigation software is available free for the travelers on the World Wide Web. All that has to be done by a traveler is to download this software on their handheld devices, and get started for the much awaited long distance road trip. Updated software for the GPS maps will enable you to easily locate even the minute details - landmarks, streets, and location within a city. The current condition of the roads and traffic will also be an added information that you can get on your car PC or handheld receiver. In fact, these softwares have been evolved over time keeping in mind the special requirements of the travelers. This is the reason they can also alert the drivers as soon as they make a wrong turn. This intimation may be in the form of a text on the screen, a voice or a beep.

There are some popular GPS softwares for navigation and route guidance. Earthcomber is a software program that allows the user to use Smartphone or blackberries to be used as the receiver. This software will elaborate on the ATMs, shops, hotels, restaurants and other landmarks that ensure a correct route. Garmap Win is GPS route guiding software that has been specifically made to work with a Garmin receiver. It offers a plethora of functions including creating route logs and managing waypoints. GPSDrive is excellent software that can be used with car, boat and plane navigation system with the help of a computer or a receiver. The user just has to download the software and locate routes on a map that can be zoomed to a desirable level for easy navigation.

I have a stack of business cards that I suspect will one day be tossed. I'm sure most of us do. It just takes too long to manually enter them into your contact manager. What if I could use my phone to take a picture of the card then a program would automatically convert the image into a contact? Optical character recognition programs that convert image to text have been around for years and they have gotten better (I know...I am a software engineer and worked with OCR software for some time). But are versions that run on your Android phone ready for daily use? I gave the free version of Cam Card a spin on two different business cards to see if it could accurately convert image to contact. Unlocked cell phones are sought after by many because after all, who wouldn't want to own the cell phone of their choice on their terms? An unlocked cell phone is any cell phone that isn't coded or 'locked' to only function with a certain plan or provider. Companies that make cell phones such as Motorola, Samsung, and Nokia merely make the actual phones; cell phone plan providers such as T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T are the ones who generally sell phones tied to their network.

The problem with locked phones is that they only function on the network of the provider with whom you have a current cell phone contract with. Many people try to override this by simply taking their SIM chip (a card that stores one's contract information, numbers, plan type, and more) and placing it in a phone from another provider. Some providers don't use these chips making it near impossible to use their phone with over services while some phones are coded not to accept SIM chips from another provider.

This locking of phones restricts one's ability to get the best phone for their needs or wants and essentially locks someone into using only the phones their provider offers. These phones may not be the one you want, may be poor quality, or maybe just don't have the same features and abilities of that cool new phone everyone else seems to have.

Unlocked cell phones get rid of this restriction and allow you to use the phone on any network you choose as long as the phone is compatible with the network being accessed and as long as you have a functioning SIM chip from a current provider that fits in the phone.

Getting an unlocked cell phone used to be a skill only techies could do, but nowadays many cell phone makers produce and cell unlocked versions of their popular models to electronics stores and online to anyone who wants them. Then people can take their SIM chips and 'plug' this phone into their current cell phone plan. You'll generally pay more upfront for an unlocked phone because most providers offer discounts on handsets if you buy it from them in a contract.

You'll also run into limitations with an unlocked phone at times. Some networks only work with certain phones or have content on their networks only accessible by certain phone models. Also many cell phone providers have fought back foolishly against unlocked cell phones by contracting with cell phone makers for exclusive phone models only available through the plan provider. A popular example of this exclusive phone for one provider is Apple's iPhone that is only available with an AT&T phone contract and impossible to legally buy unlocked as of mid-2008. Also many phone models may be available to anyone, but a certain network might have the maker design a slightly different version of the model for their customers.

Unlocked cell phones are really something that should be made available to everyone, the restrictiveness of cell phone contracts and phones being available only with certain providers take power away from the customers. Computer for example can generally connect to any internet provider you wish and most software is designed to work with a wide array of computer makes and models. The consumer chooses the computer that fits their needs, then the software and internet plans that meet those needs without being forced into one plan or the other.

Cell phone plan providers need to see that unlocked cell phones give users a choice and allow them to access the network that best suits their needs with the device that they want. Too many people either settle for subpar phones because of their contract or plan while others go to a provider only because they have the hottest new phone handset; only to be disappointed by service or plan rates. Unlocked cell phones work on most networks and most providers, but for now they tend to cost a little more and take a little researching before being able to talk on the go.

This plan allows 450 daytime minutes and unlimited night and weekend minutes. What AT&T customers really seem to enjoy are such features as the AT&T Connect or Teleconcierge. Operators quickly find numbers for anyplace, anywhere in the U.S., make reservations for you, get local movie times, and call back to confirm your dinner reservations. Other unique services include stock quotes, event listings, weather reports, and daily horoscopes.

One increasingly popular type of cell phone plan is pre-paid calling plans. AT&T offers the Go Phone with pre-paid plans, free unlimited night and weekend minutes, no contracts to sign, no credit check or activation fee, or deposit. They also offer Free 2 Go Wireless Solutions, also pre-paid with no contracts or credit checks. However the Go Phone plan gives you the unlimited free off prime minutes, lower per minute prices, wider choice of AT&T cell phones, and more choices of AT&T ring tones, and choices in payment options. For instance you can even set up a plan to have your credit or debit card to automatically add to your account when the minutes get low.

The AT&T Go Phone plan also offers lower international dialing rates to its Go Phone customers. Recently AT&T began to offer a new type of digital phone service known as GSM/GPRS, which provides a true 56 kilobyte per second internet connection speed for lap top computers hooked up to the GSM phone line or that use a GSM plug in cord. Remember though that the rates for this service is high with 400 voice minutes and one megabyte of data transmission can add .00 to your regular monthly bill. AT&T's numerous plans, versatile payment options and TDMA and GSM technology have helped placed AT&T near the top of successful cellular phone carriers.

1. Before trying anything else, contact your service provider and ask for an unlock code as per your nokia model. Usually, if you've been a customer of theirs for some time, they will provide you with free mobile unlock codes for your mobile phone. This is, by far, the best way to get your nokia phone unlocked.
2. Download software to generate the unlocking code. Software is available on some websites for free and some pay websites that also offer support if things go wrong. See external links below.
3. Find the Serial number of the nokia phone, also known as your IMEI number. This IMEI number help you to find nokia unlock codes for various nokia models. This can be done by either removing the back of your cell phone and looking underneath the battery, or simply by typing in *#06# into your cell phone. It should be something like: 010072321539976/07961780836
4. Using the software you have downloaded, enter in your Manufacturer (which is in this case Nokia), and sliding the card out. Put the battery back in and power the phone on.
5. You will see a message "Insert SIM Card". Enter all of the characters you see in your code, including the # symbols. To get a 'p' press * 3 times, to get a '+' press the * key 2 times, to get a 'w' press the * key 4 times. Disregard any spaces in the code.
6. In order to unlock your phone you generally need to enter only one code. Start with the first one. If your phone is not unlocked by typing the first code (MCC+MNC), use code "7" (Multilock)
7. Once you have finished entering a code that works you should see a message that says "SIM is not restricted" or "Restriction off" message depending on your model. If not, try entering another code. Message "Cannot undo restrictions" means the phone is "hard-locked" and cannot be unlocked by code.

• Be sure to backup important information from your nokia phone [Contacts, Messages etc].
• Make copies of all files downloaded from your phone *before* they are modified. If something is wrong with the modified copy, you can reload the unmodified one to go "back to normal" in many cases.
