It's a phone dominated society with technology now reaching a point where almost everyone seems to be carrying some type of communication device where ever they go.

Back in the 18th century in the US, people used to carry gun holsters on their hip, then they were outlawed and only those licensed to use them such as the law could carry them. Now, we've almost gone full circle and instead of guns, people now carry holsters on the hips carrying a communication device such as a phone.

Consider PDA's or Personal Digital Assistants. Once upon a time they were simply calculators but in a short space of time, have become a necessary piece of communication for the majority. While there may be a learning curve associated with them it seems the biggest challenge than facing people is which one to choose.

The same applies to cell phones and with the integration of the two, communicating personally, by message text or via email is now as mobile as it gets. Originally, they started out as big as bricks but soon decreased in size and as they did, became more powerful.

Devices such as the Blackberry and the Iphone in recent years have taken these communication levels to a brand new level and the truth is, we "ain't seen nothing yet." Now being able to talk with someone away from home is the norm, being able to get online without a computer is almost the norm and not having to worry about a phone cord is...well, what's that!

Wireless technology was aazing when it first surfaced but now, it's just part of the landscape. Sometimes, it's not about finding the cheapest deal with phone cards but finding the company offering the best service. Here are some of the things you should look for when purchasing a card.

1. Make sure all information is disclosed up front. You are the buyer and the last thing you want is to be hit with any nasty surprises later on.

2. Avoid deals where the rates change depending on what time of the day it is. You want rates that are at a constant level 24 hours a day.

3. Ask whether the first minute or two of a call is higher than the remaining minutes of the call. If they are, ask why. Avoid these offers if possible.

4. Get all the information you can on any fees you're not aware of. Things like connection fees, maintenance fees or even sign up fees. Don't ignore these. There is nothing worse than thinking you have $10 dollars worth of calls and when you go to make a call, you suddenly discover your account is a couple of dollars lighter because of fees.

5. Worldwide phone cards are great and very convenient but what happens when something goes wrong? This is actually the first thing I look at when buying a card... the company's customer service. Best case scenario, you want to be able to contact a customer service rep 24/7.

- Look out for hidden maintenance costs. These are like hidden bank fees in a sense where a fee is charged either weekly or monthly. In some instances, even daily. This is hard to comprehend and is another fee which should be avoided.

- Extra surcharges can eat away at your talk time. For example, making calls from public phones could incur a high surcharge rate. Check this before purchasing your card particularly if you plan to travel overseas where you'll be using public phones on a regular basis.

Prepaid Phone Cards - Be Prudent When Purchasing

Calling cards have made life a lot easier for people wanting to stay in touch with family and friends overseas. Use a little consumer etiquette before purchasing and make sure you understand the hidden cost factor. In fact, rather than being lured in by the low cost per minute rate, read the fine print first. It is so convenient for international travelers to have a phone card.  They are now becoming increasingly popular for people to use for making long distance calls from their own home.

Many users of the telephone are starting to keep a phone card on hand all the time.  This is because they are starting to realize how good the rates are and that they can save money.  They are so easy to use and are very cost effective – who wouldn’t want to get one?

There are many different types of phone cards, so you may need to investigate your options before you start using them.  You can even buy them online, and if you do an internet search, you will find out how very easily.

When you surf the net to buy a phone card, choose a site that is highly rated.  This means others use it as well, and they are successful, longstanding and trustworthy.

You will be asked to enter credit card details and choose your phone card option.  You will be given a pin number, and within a minute or so, can being using your credit.  There are often processes in place to protect you from fraudulent credit card activities, which is another advantage.  Once you have bought one, the process is even quicker for your return visits.

If it’s your first phone card, begin with a small amount.  If you buy a ten dollar card, you will be able to test the process and work out how to use it.  This will probably give you at least three hundred minutes of international phone calls.

Once you are in the habit of using the card, you will want to buy more credit.  You will often find you are offered special deals for buying extra, and if you are planning to use it a lot, this may be a good idea.  You should work to memorize your pin number, and since it is only up to ten numbers long, it should be fairly easy for you.

If you do forget your phone card pin number, you can retrieve it online.  You will have an online account you can access to make changes and purchase credit.  Here you can identify yourself and find out your pin number.

Phone cards really are great value for money.  Do some research and make your choice wisely, as there are many different companies and options available.  Once you get the hang of using it, you will find yourself wishing you had started with them ages ago.

Just as vital as your underwear and air tickets, every traveler should have an international phone card.  They are also useful for every day use by the general public, as they provide a cost effective method for contacting anyone over seas.

I have a story that is a perfect example of how good international phone cards are.  A few years ago I visited the US, and as luck would have it, I met a woman that I fell head over heals for.  Anyway, a long story short, here I am trying to organize visa’s and marriage licenses!  The whole process is taking so much longer than I ever expected.  My international phone card has been a blessing!

Maybe I am stingy, but I was worried about how much money I would be handing over to the phone company for my daily catch up calls.  With this phone card, I have been able to have long talks(as only men love to do!) and it’s costing hardly any money.  My dad uses one too to call his friends overseas, which is a relief because he is a man who seriously does love to talk.  He has always been so cheap with the telephone though, and he says he would rather save for a trip to Italy than waste any money on phone calls.  Since he discovered the international phone card, he is a changed man.  Often we think we can only use these products when we are away or using a pay phone, but they are just as useful from any home telephone.

So many stores have international phone card deals from newsagents to supermarkets and chemists.  There are options like twenty hours of talk to the states for only $20, and that’s just the beginning.  They are fantastic for those who like to use phone conferencing techniques, as you could have a one-hour meeting for less than a few dollars!  It’s revolutionary!  Another bonus when you take it over seas is you don’t have to run around trying to convert your money and work out the telephone prices.  All you need to do is insert your card.  This is especially handy for short stop-overs when you just want to call and check in.

You can see why I say your international phone card is as important as your tickets and your underwear.  Your trip will be smooth sailing and stress free for you and your loved ones if you have one.  Don’t disappoint people by not calling because it’s just too much trouble, rather impress them with your adept ability at keeping them updated, I you’re your mum will sleep a lot better at night too!

An international prepaid phone card has been beneficial, not only to travelers but also for immigrants worldwide. It's a big step to leave your country and familiar surroundings and one way people overcome the initial home sickness is by staying in touch with family and friends back home.

With traditional calling facilities, this can be an expensive exercise but the international prepaid phone card has been like a "breath of fresh air" for new migrants who can call their former country just a few cents a minute. Choosing the right international prepaid phone card though can be a little confusing with so many choices available to consumers. So let's take a look and some of the pros and cons in the selection process.

International Prepaid Phone Card Advantages

- International phone cards are cheaper than traditional calling methods. For instance, I get 600 minutes talk time for less than ten dollars with my card. There are much cheaper cards around.
- Fast and easy to use.
- Easy to top up with most services.
- You control your spending, in other words you know how much you've spent and how much you can spend.

International Prepaid Phone Card Disadvantages

- Hidden fees are a real nuisance but these can be avoided with some due diligence. Make sure you read the fine print to find out if there are any extra costs involved. It may cost more to call cell phones.
- Disclaimers are often hidden away and hard to read.
- The need to top up cards when your talk time runs out could be considered an inconvenience for some but many companies now offer top up services over the phone.
- Poor customer service. With many card companies, actually being able to talk with anyone from the company can become a little like a "treasure hunt."

In the end, the advantages certainly outweigh the disadvantages. By following some simple well worn guidelines in the selection process, you can make your international prepaid phone card experience a happy one. One more thing, when you find a reliable company, my advice is to stick with them and resist the temptation to switch to cheaper offers!

Choosing an online phone card can be a confusing experience for a new time user. There are so many choices to make but making the right choice involves a process of due diligence and elimination.

The reason you'll shop for an online phone card is to take advantage of the cheaper call rates and for those with friends and family overseas, phone cards provide a great opportunity to spend more time chatting to the people most important in your lives.

Selecting An Online Phone Card

When I select an online phone card, I perform a checklist of requirements before deciding on the right card for my situation. Here are some questions you'll need to ask yourself:

#1. What is the per minute cost of calls to my destination of choice? Surprisingly, I didn't choose the cheapest option out there simply because there were too many grey areas present. Sometimes cheapest isn't best and in the end, the choice you make may be a combination of things.

#2. Will the rates vary or stay constant? Are there any hidden fees? This was important. I preferred to select a card that offered constant rates and the opportunity of earning bonus minutes in relation to how often I used the card. The last thing I needed were unwelcome surprises. Another factor I considered was the charge of connection and maintenance fees. I wanted a straight out rate and this is one area you will need be clear about when choosing your online phone card.

#3. Placing more than one call without re-entering the pin? This wasn't a major factor in my overall decision however, I liked the idea of not going through the entire process of re-dialling lengthy pin numbers if I happened to be disconnected. This could occur by several means but one of the most common is flat phone batteries. This is an option to consider but more a preferred choice.

#4. Customer service... could I contact my phone card company if a problem arose? In the end, this was the one requirement I placed the most emphasis on. Even though they weren't the cheapest, their level of customer service was fantastic and for the sake of a few cents for every hour I spent on the phone, it was well worth it. I recently put the customer service factor to the test when I required a copy of my phone records for a 12 month period. They reciprocated with a full copy within three days. It was no trouble at all. I couldn't have asked for any more.

As a money saver on phone calls, an online phone card is just the ticket. One thing I found was that the cheapest phone card on the market wasn't necessarily the best option. In fact, my card was a little more expensive than most but what I had was a reliable provider who I have developed a good relationship with. They are no "fly by nighters" which has been a problem in this industry and if I "struck a hurdle" I was always satisfied in the knowledge I could pick up the phone and speak to a customer service representative and have my issue resolved quick smart. To me, that's worth the extra I pay for my online phone card.
